"I have the most pleasant recollections and dreams about the Transkei of my childhood, where I hunted, played sticks, stole mealies on the cob and where I learnt to count; it is a world which is gone. "If there is one appeal I could make, it is that young people must take it upon themselves to ensure that they receive the highest education possible so that they can represent us well in the future as future leaders." Mandela was able to receive formal education.
"To our generation, education became a key to unlock the gates of oppression, a tool against the warped logic of the slave-master. Institutions of learning became the centre to challenge colonial domination and injustice. For this, the thorny gown and cap of achievement were detention, death, exile and long terms of imprisonment." Nelson Mandela was not exposed as a young child to the effects of apartheid and did not know of the dangers until he became involved in politics.
